Jeff Bezos is on the verge of a historic deal: buying a stake in Liverpool and record Amazon market capitalization.

Amazon shares are trading near all-time highs, and company founder Jeff Bezos is preparing to acquire roughly a third of the shares of the English football club Liverpool. This is not just sports news, but a signal of how the world's largest capitals are revising their investment strategies.

A consortium of billionaires: who is behind the deal

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns the club, could announce the deal as early as this week. According to my data, the stake the consortium plans to acquire will exceed 30%, and the club itself is valued at approximately $6 billion. The consortium is managed by Amit Bhatia — the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who previously held a stake in Queens Park Rangers.

Bezos is joined in the same group by Eduardo Saverin — the 44-year-old co-founder of Facebook, who in 2022 already attempted to acquire London's Chelsea. Bezos's fortune exceeds $280 billion, while Saverin's is over $32 billion. An official representative of the consortium confirmed interest in strategic investment in a minority stake in the club.

Numbers and context: from $300 million to $6 billion

FSG acquired Liverpool for £300 million in 2010. In 2023, Dynasty Equity bought a small stake, valuing the club above $4.5 billion. The current valuation of $6 billion sums up 16 years of profitable work. Notably, Bezos previously had no public ties to football deals, making this move especially telling.

Liverpool is going through a transitional period: the club dismissed coach Arne Slot and lost winger Mohamed Salah. In the 2024–2025 season, the team became Premier League champions, but the following season dropped to fifth place.

Amazon shares: at the threshold of $3 trillion

On Friday, Amazon's stock closed at $274.48, showing a 0.82% gain for the day. Over the year, the shares have risen 24.2%, and since January — 18.65%. The company's market capitalization first exceeded $3 trillion on August 3, but the record lasted only a day. Amazon is now worth approximately $2.96 trillion, with a 52-week high of $287.2.

The growth was driven by the cloud service Amazon Web Services. Analysts have raised target prices, with the most optimistic estimate reaching $400. Bezos himself completed a planned sale of shares worth $4 billion this month — the filing was submitted eight months ago, indicating the planned rather than speculative nature of the deal.

My view

This is a classic example of diversification of ultra-large capital: sports are becoming an independent investment asset, not just a branding story. For the crypto industry, there is also a lesson here — tokenization of stocks and assets is gaining momentum, and such deals only accelerate this process. In the coming days, it will become clear whether Liverpool's new partners remain passive investors or begin a fight for full control of the club.
