Jeff Dean, co-founder of Google Brain, is leaving the tech giant for a next-generation AI startup.

Google 2025

One of the architects of modern machine learning, Jeff Dean, has decided to leave Google to lead the ambitious Discovery Loop project. This is not just another job change—it is a signal of a paradigm shift in the development of artificial intelligence.

Alongside Dean, key figures from the former Google Brain and DeepMind teams have joined the new startup: Quoc Le, Sanjay Ghemawat, and Oriol Vinyals. Each of them is a recognized authority in the field of neural networks and deep learning, which speaks to the seriousness of the team's intentions.

Focus on automating science

The main goal of Discovery Loop is to create AI systems capable of automating scientific research and radically accelerating the process of developing new technologies. This is not about chatbots or content generation, but about a fundamental transformation of how humanity makes discoveries. This is a direction that I have long considered one of the most undervalued in the industry.

The project's financial backing is impressive: among the investors are Alphabet itself, as well as leading venture capital funds Khosla Ventures, Radical Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and Lightspeed. Such a lineup suggests that the market sees enormous potential in the combination of AI and scientific methodology.

Dean's departure from Google is not a loss for the corporation, but rather a sign of maturity in the entire ecosystem. When the best minds begin to build independent laboratories, we get a competition of ideas that ultimately benefits everyone. I expect that in the coming years we will see a wave of similar startups aimed at scientific discoveries, and it is they that will become the engine of the next technological leap.
