CertiK Analysis: Home Invasions Have Become the Dominant Type of Wrench Attack in the Crypto Industry

Analytical platform CertiK has presented alarming statistics for the first half of 2024: 52 cases of so-called "wrench attacks" have been recorded — physical assaults aimed at forcing cryptocurrency asset owners to transfer their funds. Key finding: home invasions have sharply come to the forefront, increasing from one incident in the previous period to 20 in the current one. This represents a 33% increase compared to the same period last year.
The total amount of damage associated with these attacks reached $124.1 million. Notably, the geographic concentration of incidents has shifted: the largest number of attacks — 33 — occurred in France. This indicates that attackers are actively adapting to local conditions, selecting targets in regions with a high concentration of crypto wealth and relatively weak physical security.
The methodology of wrench attacks remains unchanged: criminals do not hack digital wallets but use brute force — threats, blackmail, or direct violence — to force the victim to voluntarily transfer funds. Home invasions, as statistics show, have become the most effective and, unfortunately, popular tool: they allow attackers to gain full control over the environment, including access to seed phrases, hardware wallets, and private keys.
The increase in such attacks highlights a fundamental vulnerability in the ecosystem: the security of crypto assets still heavily depends on the physical security of their owners. Even the most complex multi-signature schemes and cold wallets are useless if an attacker can force you to sign a transaction at gunpoint.
