CertiK Analysis: Home Invasions Become the Primary Threat Among Wrench Attacks in the Crypto Sphere

In the first half of this year, experts recorded a worrying trend in the world of cryptocurrencies: the number of so-called wrench attacks—physical assaults aimed at forcibly taking over digital assets—increased by 33% compared to the same period last year. A total of 52 such incidents were registered.

The most striking and dangerous change was a sharp increase in the number of home invasions. While only one such case was recorded in the previous reporting period, the number has now reached 20. This indicates that attackers are moving from street robberies to more planned and aggressive actions, directly infiltrating the residences of cryptocurrency holders.

Financial consequences and geography of attacks

The total amount of damage associated with these incidents amounted to an impressive $124.1 million. Particularly concerning is the statistics for France, which accounted for 33 attacks. This makes the country one of the most affected regions, which may be linked to a high concentration of wealthy crypto investors or insufficient physical protection of their assets.

As an independent analyst, I believe the rise in home invasions is a signal for the entire community. Cold wallets and complex passwords are useless if an attacker can physically force you to hand them over. Investors need to reconsider personal security protocols: use multi-signature schemes, store keys in distributed locations, and possibly consider insurance against such risks. The cryptocurrency market is becoming increasingly mature, but along with this, attackers' methods are evolving, moving from the digital realm into the physical one.
