Physical attacks on crypto owners: home invasions have become the main threat

A security market analysis for the first half of 2024 has revealed an alarming trend: the number of so-called "wrench attacks"—physical assaults aimed at forcibly seizing crypto assets—has sharply increased. According to my data, 52 such incidents were recorded, a 33% rise compared to the previous corresponding period. The total damage associated with these attacks reached $124.1 million.

The most significant change was a sharp increase in home invasions targeting victims. While such cases were previously rare (only one in the prior period), their number has now grown to 20. This indicates that attackers are shifting from street robberies to more planned and dangerous operations aimed at penetrating the personal spaces of cryptocurrency owners. France emerged as the most affected country, accounting for 33 attacks, suggesting a possible concentration of criminal groups or vulnerabilities in local security measures.

From my professional perspective, this trend is a direct consequence of the rising value of digital assets and users' insufficient awareness of physical security risks. The crypto community must reconsider its approaches: publicly disclosing large holdings, lacking physical home protection, and using unreliable key storage methods are becoming critical risk factors. I recommend that investors with large portfolios use multi-signature wallets, hardware storage with additional layers of protection, and, most importantly, never publicly flaunt their assets. Physical security is the new frontier of cyber warfare, and ignoring it is no longer an option.
