Russia legalizes cryptocurrencies: new law recognizes digital assets as property

The State Duma of the Russian Federation has adopted in its final, second and third readings the key bill "On Digital Currency and Digital Rights." This document marks a historic shift in the Russian legal system: digital currencies are officially recognized as property.

What does the law change?

The new law introduces uniform and clear rules for the circulation of cryptocurrencies on the territory of the Russian Federation. One of the most significant provisions is the automatic judicial protection of rights to digital assets, and this protection is granted regardless of whether they were previously declared by the owner. This eliminates one of the main legal gaps that previously made owning cryptocurrency risky from a legal standpoint.

For the law to come into force, it must be approved by the Federation Council and signed by the President. However, it is already possible to say that the Russian cryptocurrency market is entering a new era. After all bureaucratic procedures are completed, Russian citizens will gain a legal opportunity to invest in cryptocurrencies through regulated channels: Russian exchanges, professional brokers, and trust managers.

This decision sets a precedent for countries that have long balanced between a complete ban and ignoring digital assets. Legislative recognition of cryptocurrencies as property is not just a formality, but a foundation for developing infrastructure, a tax base, and attracting institutional investors.

Analytical commentary: The adoption of this law is a powerful signal for the market. I expect that in the coming months we will see a sharp increase in activity from Russian banks and brokers, who will begin integrating cryptocurrency services. However, the key issue will remain taxation and mechanisms for controlling transactions—it is these details that will determine how comfortable and safe the new legal environment will be for investors.
