The State Duma legalizes cryptocurrencies: a law on digital currencies has been adopted

A tectonic shift has occurred in the Russian regulatory framework. The State Duma adopted the law "On Digital Currency and Digital Rights" in the second and third readings simultaneously, indicating a high degree of consensus among legislators on this issue. This step marks a transition from an uncertain legal status to clear recognition of cryptocurrencies.

The key innovation is the official recognition of digital currencies as property. This is a fundamental change that paves the way for judicial protection of crypto asset owners' rights, regardless of whether they were previously declared. This point is particularly important: it creates a precedent where even assets that have not undergone the declaration procedure receive legal protection.

The law also introduces general rules for cryptocurrency circulation. Now, the mechanism for legal investment for Russians will look like this: transactions with digital currencies will be possible exclusively through controlled Russian exchanges, brokers, and trust managers. This completely eliminates anonymous P2P transactions outside the regulated field.

However, the final point has not yet been set. For the document to come into force, it must be approved by the Federation Council and signed by the president. After that, the Russian cryptocurrency market will receive an official "green light."

Expert commentary: From my point of view, this is not just legalization, but an attempt by the state to build a fully controlled circuit for digital asset circulation. The law creates an illusion of freedom while simultaneously driving all turnover into infrastructure accountable to regulators. Investors should prepare for total transaction monitoring through licensed intermediaries.
