LSE prepares night trading session for 2027 — response to the tokenization challenge

RWA tokenization

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) has announced plans to launch a separate platform for night trading in the first half of 2027. This move aims to strengthen competition with the tokenized asset market, which already provides round-the-clock liquidity and accessibility.

How the new session will work

The platform will operate from 5:00 PM to 7:50 AM local time, with a half-hour technical break. In the initial phase, investors will be offered exchange-traded products linked to UK and US markets. This will allow trading participants to respond to events occurring after the close of main sessions.

My analysis of the situation

The LSE's decision is a direct response to the growing popularity of tokenized securities, which trade 24/7 on blockchain platforms. Traditional exchanges are losing market share due to limited trading hours, while DeFi and tokenization offer unprecedented flexibility. The introduction of night trading is a logical but belated step that can only partially compensate for the outflow of liquidity toward digital assets.

The key question is whether the LSE can ensure sufficient market depth during night hours. Without attracting global market makers and institutional investors accustomed to round-the-clock crypto platforms, this initiative risks remaining niche. However, if the exchange manages to integrate real-time settlement technologies, it could pose a serious challenge to tokenized alternatives.

My professional opinion: Night trading is only a temporary measure. In the long term, traditional exchanges will be forced either to transition to hybrid models with tokenization elements or to fully integrate blockchain infrastructure. Otherwise, they risk sharing the fate of payphones in the era of smartphones.
