The hacking of Binance's hot wallets on the Ethereum network triggered a sharp surge in demand for protective options. The BTC implied volatility index jumped to its highest level since August, and the market is pricing in the strongest coin fluctuations in recent months — although over the quarterly horizon, market participants do not expect a serious crisis.
The DVOL index on the Deribit exchange rose to 41.99 as of October 29 — the highest since August. The indicator reflects the volatility priced into 30-day BTC options, and its jump coincided with the alleged hacking of Binance's hot wallets. According to available data, Tether and Circle have already frozen more than $2.3 billion in stolen stablecoins.
There is no panic, however. The price difference between put and call options (25-delta risk reversal) at 02:08 Moscow time on October 30 was -5.51 points of volatility — downside protection cost more. By 05:24 Moscow time, the indicator had narrowed to -2.94, even though BTC had fallen to $77,044.
Traders quickly bought protection and then stopped adding to it. The repricing primarily affected short tenors: volatility of weekly options with a strike near the current price rose from 33.6% on the night of October 29 to 46%, while three-month volatility rose only from 36.6% to 37.7%.
The on-chain reaction proved stronger. Net outflow from Binance on October 29 amounted to 22,159 BTC, or about $1.7 billion at the current rate — the largest daily figure in a year. Part of the volume may come from transfers between the exchange's own wallets, which cannot be distinguished from client withdrawals based on this data. It is actual withdrawals, not news headlines, that will determine BTC's further dynamics.
It is worth noting: option buyers typically overpay. Since April 2022, DVOL exceeded the actual volatility of the following 30 days on 73.8% of 1,616 days. Even now, 28-day options are priced at 37.89% versus actual 26.31%. The expiration of $10.4 billion in options on Deribit on October 30 became a test for the market, and the "max pain" level for them is $78,000.
Key triggers for the market
If the outflow from Binance exceeds 10,000 BTC for a second consecutive day and the risk reversal returns below -5, protection will begin to spread to longer tenors. If withdrawals drop to 5,000 BTC or below and DVOL falls under 38, the alarm can be considered contained.
Binance has officially confirmed the largest hack in crypto industry history with losses of about $6.3 billion, but promised to cover all losses from the SAFU insurance fund and its own funds. The exchange, together with partners, has already frozen about $3 billion — which is probably why the market's alarm never escalated into panic.
Cryptalist analysis: The spike in DVOL to 42 amid a relatively restrained expansion of three-month volatility points to an event-driven rather than structural nature of the stress — the market is pricing the risk of a short-term shock, not a regime change. The key indicator for further direction remains the dynamics of net outflows from Binance: sustained withdrawals above 10,000 BTC per day could turn a targeted hedge into a full-blown wave of selling.
