Jeff Dean, co-founder of Google Brain, launches a new AI startup to accelerate scientific discoveries.

Google 2025

One of the key architects of modern machine learning, Jeff Dean, has officially left the ranks of Google to lead the ambitious Discovery Loop project. This is not just another job change—it is a signal of where the entire artificial intelligence industry is heading.

Alongside Dean, leading specialists whose names are well known in academic and engineering circles have moved to the new startup: Quoc Le, Sanjay Ghemawat, and Oriol Vinyals. All of them are former Google Brain and DeepMind researchers, which automatically places Discovery Loop among the most competent teams in the world.

Automating Science: The Next Frontier of AI

The startup's main mission is to develop AI systems capable of automating scientific research. This is not about simple data analysis, but about creating autonomous agents that can generate hypotheses, design experiments, and accelerate the time-to-market for new technologies. This is a fundamentally different level of neural network application, extending far beyond chatbots and content generation.

The project's financial backing is impressive: among the investors are Alphabet, Khosla Ventures, Radical Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and Lightspeed. The fact that Alphabet itself, Google's parent company, is investing in the business of former key employees speaks to the strategic importance of this direction.

This move confirms my long-standing assessment: we are entering an era where AI becomes not a tool, but a full-fledged partner to the scientist. If Dean's team manages to pull off what they have planned, the speed at which breakthrough technologies emerge—from new materials to medicines—could increase by an order of magnitude, which will inevitably impact adjacent markets, including cryptocurrencies and decentralized computing.
